Being a WAHM (Work at home mom) for almost 12 years I have picked up on some things to help me work more efficiently. Let’s face it taking care of children while trying to manage a business from home is no easy feat. You know those times where you feel extremely exhausted and stressed to even look at the dishes piled in the sink, hungry kids, crying baby and that business email and phone call you need to make? Yeah, I have been there too many times to count. Not easy one bit, but it does take dedication and balance to make it work for not just you but for the entire family.
Here are some things that have helped relief some of the stresses off of me while running a home business being a mom who also homeschools:
1. Get enough sleep
Sleep is an essential part of your daily function. Yeah I know it is easier said than done when you have kids but it is a very important part to maximizing your success in your day to day living. Being sleep deprived can lead to many health issues such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Sleep deprived can also affect ones health. I know for me, if I do not get the right amount of sleep needed I am unable to concentrate on any of the task I have at hand whether that is work task, home task or even projects I had planned to do with the kids. Everything gets affected. So at least 7-9 hours of sleep is essential for day to day function.
2. Eat right and Exercise
If your body is not functioning properly than it makes it a lot more challenging to tackle the daily to do task. Eating right and exercising is an important part to helping your body function to take care of those tasks. Eating right and daily exercise is great for increasing energy and keeping from losing focus which let’s face it being a Mom, staying focused is vital. Vitamin B is a great source for energy building as it converts carbohydrates to glucose for the body to generate energy.
3. Set time with the kids
Many of us chose the WHAM life to have more time with the kids. But honestly it is so easy to get distracted with work that we can sometimes forget the reasons why we started in the first place. To avoid mixing work with kid’s time have your set time that you spend doing something special with your young one with no phone or computer distraction. Leave work for work time and family time for family time.
4. Set your working hours but be flexible
As mentioned in tip #3 mixing work with family is a no go. This leaves room for nothing getting done. You will be more productive if you set your work hours but be flexible if an emergency or need to switch work hours should arrive. After all that’s one of the beauties of working from home. The hours our flexible as you get to set your own hours that work for you and your family.
5. Get some personal development time
This may seem like it’s unimportant but it is very important. Reading and/or listening to personal development helps you stay on track, especially during those down days where you wonder “what in the world was I thinking when I said yes to the Mompreneur life” yes those times are normal as being a business owner is a roller coaster. But personal development not only helps improve on areas we may need improving on but it gives you the right amount of motivation to keep going through those rough times.
6. Have some you time
Another easier said than done moment but it is a must. Being a mom and a business owner takes a lot of work. So having the time to do something you love or to just simply relaxing is essential to helping you unwind from the day to day demands of motherhood and business. This can keep you from getting burnout. Even employers give their workers days off and vacation time. Be kind to yourself.
7. Step outside and take in some Vitamin D
Last and often forgotten in the world of Mompreneurship as it is so easy to forget there is a world outside of the home and business. Vitamin D is essential for the body as it helps the body absorb calcium, keeping the bones strong and healthy. It also helps with other important body functions. So log out when you can and take time to be outside taking in the sun.
